How to paint kitchen cabinet step-by-step instructions
1. Protect the area and remove the doors
Making proper preparations helps to ensure the best possible end result. Start with protecting the area you are working in with paper or plastic and gathering all the tools you might need. Cabinet doors are possible to paint when attached but to ensure the most successful result, removing them is the way to go.
2. Clean the doors and leave them to dry
After you have set up your working area and removed the cabinet doors, clean them thoroughly using Tikkurila Kalustepesu detergent. Spread the detergent with a damp cloth and rinse it carefully with water. Leave the doors to dry before moving on to the next step.
3. Sand the surfaces
When the doors are fully dry you can start sanding all the surfaces you plan on painting. Use sandpaper with a grit from 150 to 180. After you're done sanding, ensure the surface is clean by removing any traces of dust.
4. Prime and fill up possible holes
Before spreading the primer, stir it thoroughly. Use a furniture paint roller or synthetic fibre brush to spread the primer evenly onto the surface. In case you’re working with a new wooden surface, use the Multistop primer to prevent new surface from yellowing.
If the door surfaces you're working with have holes or scratches, use Helmi Kalustekitti, let it dry and sand to even the surface out.
5. Paint the top coat
Stir the paint carefully before starting and use a furniture paint roller or synthetic fibre brush. To ensure a flawless finish, apply one to two layers and leave the cabinet doors to dry according to the product instructions.
Assemble the cabinet doors when paint is dried.
