Transforming space through colour
Repainting floor tiles is a fantastic way to refresh a space and enhance its overall aesthetic. The choice of colour plays a crucial role in determining how a space is perceived and experienced. Simply choose the desired colour from our comprehensive colour cards:
Light colours like white and pastel shades can make a room feel larger and more open. They also tend to highlight cleanliness and are associated with hygiene. Dark colours like blue and anthracite can add an element of elegance to a room. Dark hues can also make a large space feel cosier. Colours inspired by nature, such as soft greens, browns and beiges, create a calming and relaxed environment. Earth tones have a timeless appeal that works well with various design styles.
Choose a gloss or matt finish
The finish of the paint system will also contribute to the overall feel. Glossy finishes reflect light and add a sleek, modern touch, while matt finishes offer a less slippery, more subtle, contemporary look. Tikkurila topcoats are available in a gloss or matt finish and are tintable to any colour of your choice.

How to paint the tiles
Check the stability and condition of the floor tiles and joints before painting, ensuring they are well-glued and there are no loose elements. Any damage, defects, and cracks should be repaired. The tiles must be clean of limescale, dirt, and grease. Application on glazed tiles is possible after removing the glaze or sanding the tiles to a matt finish.
1. Prepare the space
Remove any limescale with Supi Saunapesu.
Clean grease and dirt from tiles using a mix of 1 part Tikkurila Maalipesu and 5 parts water. Rinse the tiles with plenty of water to remove any detergent residue.
Ensure both tiles and tile joints are dry before painting.
Remove worn silicone.
Use masking tape to protect any surfaces you don’t want painted.
Turn any underfloor heating off.
2. Prime the floor tiles
Thoroughly mix Fontefloor EP 100 base and hardener in a 3:1 ratio by volume. Add 10–20% water and mix again. The mixture will cover approximately 0.1 l/m2 (about 50 µm dry film thickness) and should be used within 50 min of combining the components.
Use a brush or small roller to apply the primer to hard-to-reach areas. Paint the remaining area and level it with a roller to achieve an even layer.
3. Paint the floors
Thoroughly mix Fontefloor PU Matt base and hardener in a 10:1 ratio by volume.
Add 10–20% water and mix again. The mixture will cover approximately 0.1 l/m2 (about 50 µm dry film thickness) and should be used within 60 min of combining the components.
Use a brush or small roller to apply the topcoat to hard-to-reach areas. Paint the remaining area and level it with a felt or microfibre roller.
Finish up and admire your work
Turn any underfloor heating back on and remove masking tape.
The bathroom can be used again after two days.
The painted surface will achieve its final hardness and durability after one week at room temperature.
Remember:
• Carefully remove worn silicon prior to painting
• Turn any underfloor heating off before painting
• Remove masking tape immediately after painting is finished
• Follow application instructions and pay attention to mixing ratios
• If the primed floor is not painted over within 24 hours, it should be lightly sanded down
