Repainted bathroom tiles breathe new life into an outdated space
Bathroom transformation breathes new life into a space, creating a fresh and updated look that enhances the overall aesthetic of a home.
The bathroom in Kristina’s house looked old and tired, with pale and unfashionable colours.
The bathroom tiles were installed more than 15 years ago and the bathroom didn't feel like a pleasant space to be. The decision was made to transform the space with a fresh, new look that is stylish, durable and cost effective. The repainted tiles instantly modernised the outdated bathroom.
Fresh and modern aesthetics
Tile colour can have a significant impact on a bathroom's atmosphere. Light colours like white, cream and pastel shades can make a bathroom feel larger and more open; bold colours such as navy blue or emerald green can create a dramatic and sophisticated look. For this project, a modern grey shade with a hint of green (H446) was chosen for the walls, and a complementary darker shade (N495) for the floors. The complementary colours helped to create a harmonious and stylish space, with the intensity of the shades varying according to the lighting conditions, looking different in natural or artificial light.
Gloss level contribution
Colour is not the only consideration. The gloss level also contributes to the overall feel. Glossy finishes reflect light and add a sleek, modern touch, while matte finishes offer a more subtle, contemporary look.
Practical considerations
Selecting the right painting system will influence the final wear resistance of the tile surface and whether the tiles will be non-slip. When choosing a painting system, it is important to consider durability and maintenance.
• Durability: Tikkurila tile paints are formulated to withstand the humid conditions of a bathroom. Two-component paint systems in particular provide a hard, durable finish that is resistant to moisture, hot and cold water, shampoos, oil, grease and food and drink. This ensures newly painted tiles look great for years to come.
• Ease of maintenance: Repainted tiles are easy to clean and maintain. Simply wipe them down with a mild, non-abrasive cleaner to keep them looking fresh and new.
• Cost effectiveness: It is easier and cheaper to repaint tiles than have the hassle and expense of replacing them.
How to achieve a great result
A professional painter helped to transform Kristina’s bathroom by carefully following the instructions and information on product data sheets. The three main steps were:
1. Preparation. The old tiles were properly cleaned of grease and dirt with Tikkurila Maalipesu. Worn silicone was removed and masking tape was used to protect surfaces that wouldn’t be painted.
2. Wall tile painting. Luja Ceramic Tiles was applied to the wall tiles everywhere except the shower area. In the shower area, Fontefloor EP 100 with a gloss finish was used to provide greater durability.
3. Floor tile painting. The floors tiles were painted with the Fontefloor floor system:
Primer: Fontefloor EP 100
Topcoat: Fontefloor PU Matt
The paint dries to a flat, non-slip and non-reflective matt finish, creating an attractive, modern look for the floor.
Tikkurila’s low-emission, M1-classified, EPD-verified floor tile painting system ensures good indoor air quality and can be tinted to any colour.

Final touches finish the job
Once the tiles were repainted, other elements of Kristina’s bathroom were also updated to complement the fresh new look. To complete the transformation, the bathroom cabinets were repainted with Tikkurila Intact 8, making a visually appealing focal point for the room.
Tikkurila Intact 8 is suitable for use in humid indoor areas and creates a smooth matt surface with a hard finish that provides good resistance to scratches, chemicals and grease. Thanks to its good levelling and quick drying properties, it is ideal for a professional finish.
