How to oil a wooden terrace

In this guide, we'll provide instructions on oiling a wooden terrace.

Choose a dry day to treat your terrace and don’t work in direct sunlight – the wood needs to be dry and cool.

1. Clean the terrace thoroughly

Cover the walls of the house, any plants and anything else that needs protecting with plastic sheets. Mix Tikkurila’s terrace cleaner Terassi- Ja Kalustepesu with cold water and leave to stand for 15 mins. Rinse the terrace with water, mix the terrace cleaner again and apply a generous coat evenly onto the wet wood. Leave the product on the terrace for 15–30 minutes and then wash the surface thoroughly with water using a terrace brush or pressure sprayer to scrub off dirt and oil.

2. Sand uneven surfaces

Rinse the terrace with water and allow the wood to dry thoroughly. To make sure the surface is free from sharp edges, splinters and uneven parts, sand thoroughly with a sanding tool. Sweep away all the sanding dust with a suitable brush.

3. Oil the terrace

Stir Valtti Plus Terrace Oil or Valtti Plus Wood Oil thoroughly before and during use. Add a thin and even layer of the protective oil using a brush or terrace pad with an extension pole, avoiding making overlapping marks. Apply in the same direction as the wood grain in continuous strokes and coat a few boards at a time. Wipe off any unabsorbed oil immediately after application with a lint-free cloth.

We recommend using a coloured oil for terraces as the pigments protect the wood from UV.
