Application Conditions

The surface to be painted must be clean and solid. The air, paint and base temperature must be at least +5°C. In warm and in windy weather, adequate pre- and post-wetting of the painted surface must be ensured. Painting should not be done in the rain, before rain or in direct sunlight. For interior painting, it is recommended that room temperature is dropped below +20°C.

Surface preparation

Surfaces are cleaned from dirt, dust, and salts. It is advisable to remove the loose dirt with a soft brush, without rubbing, when drying gently. Wash mouldy, moss-covered surfaces with Tikkurila Mould Removal according to the instructions. The surface to be painted must be undamaged and clean from organic paints. Loose lime cement paint is removed with a steel brush (the bristles must be made of soft stainless steel or brass) or carefully with high-pressure washing so that the undamaged surface is not damaged. Possible plaster fillings are made with plaster with similar consistency as the level and roughness of the surrounding surface. Plaster with high ratio of cement is not a suitable base for lime cement paint. Other surfaces should be covered during working.

Painting

First coat:

Lime clay paint is applied with a lime brush (lime chipper) or a lime paint brush within 2 hours of paint preparation. Lime clay paint is applied at least 3 times. The next layer can be painted at the earliest the following day. The surface should be carefully and evenly moistened before and after each treatment. The surface must be uniformly moist but remain absorbent. The surface is remoistened after the last treatment. TO BE NOTED For a uniform surface, reserve a sufficient amount of the paint from the same batch. The border of the old and new paint batches is painted with a mixture of 1 part of old paint and 1 part of new paint. The work should be arranged so that the border will be as unnoticeable as possible. The uniform area is painted without interruption and painting is finished at the corners of the building, lines of the balconies or similar locations. In order to achieve a smooth result, corrective post-paintings should be avoided. The best way to fade the connecting lines is by stippling. Moisture and temperature fluctuations during paint application and drying, as well as different pore structure of the surface to be painted, may cause discolouration on the finished surface. Post-moisturising darkens the colour during drying. Mechanical stress may cause parts to appear lighter, especially dark colours. This is a characteristic feature of all matt facade paints, and has no effect on the technical functionality of the product. Lime cement painting creates a living surface with a trace of handicraft. This must be taken into account when evaluating the lime cement painted surface.

Maintenance Painting:

Surfaces painted with Finngard Kalkkisementtimaali are maintanence painted with Finngard Kalkkisementtimaali, see sections Pre-treatment, Preparation of the paint and Paint application.

Cleaning of tools

The tools are washed immediately after use either with clean water or with diluted vinegar-water solution and rinsed with clean water.

Maintenance Instructions

Dirty surfaces painted with Finngard Kalkkisementtimaali can be washed gently by pressure washing without detergent at the earliest one month after painting. The surface will have a permanent trace of washing, so the washed area must be bordered in a discreet way according to the lines of the structure. It is advisable to gently remove the loose dirt with a soft brush, without rubbing, when drying. For removing algae and mould, use Tikkurila Homeenpoisto and rinse well according to instructions. NOTE The surface always requires a new surface treatment after mould washing.
