Smoking room turned into a glowing showroom

A dull and non-inspiring smoking room is nowadays the most stylish showroom at the AS Tikkurila training centre in Tallinn. This transformation is the responsibility of Tarmo Mooste, who is a fan of science fiction, especially sci-fi films. One day he got the idea to transfer his experience to painted surfaces, and the end result is exciting, to say the least.

By profession, Tarmo is a sales representative for professional customers, but he is also an expert in design floors. He wanted to experiment with the effectiveness of Temafloor 210 Clear lacquer with a glowing powder. However, he soon realised that no matter how spectacular the floor turned out to be, it would lose some of its effectiveness unless the walls and ceiling were at the same "level". So Tarmo decided to design the entire room at the same time to get the most powerful effect. The basic idea was a futuristic disco bar that was inspired by Disney's film Tron Legacy from 2010.

A six-month project

Tarmo Mooste says he started this special project in December 2014 by making different sketches with Photoshop. 'Eventually, all the pieces fell into place. I told Sales Director Rymas Herman of my thoughts, and he immediately agreed. He also suggested that I use Optiva Ceramic Super Matt 3 for the walls and ceiling. The paint was launched by Tikkurila in March in Poland. Ivar Tomperk, who is our technical advisor, came to help with the practical work.

Originally painted white, the walls and ceiling first got a coat of Kattomusta, which is a black, full-matt acrylate latex paint. The future effect wall was treated twice with Tikkurila's water-based Taika Glow special lacquer that glows in the dark. The effect lasts up to six hours if the lacquer has been sufficiently "charged".

The desired patterns were created on the effect wall by taping. The more accurate the work, the better the end result. All walls and the ceiling were then painted once with black Optiva Ceramic Super Matt 3 (shade TVT 0202). The completely non-reflective matt finish gives the colour depth and looks the same regardless of viewing angle. Finally, the tapes were carefully removed.

The old grey tile floor was primed twice with solvent-free, white-tinted Temafloor 200 epoxy lacquer. Next, a 1 mm layer of solvent-free Temafloor P 300 epoxy coating in light green RAL 230-1 was applied. The solvent-free Temafloor 210 Clear top lacquer (1 mm layer) had been supplemented with a glowing powder of 15–20% by weight, contributing to the glowing feel. Letters cut from stainless steel, glued to the floor make up a quote from Tron Legacy, 'I kept dreaming of a world I thought I'd never see and then one day I got in'.

Green Temadur 90 and Black Temadur 20 with a 15% increment of Temamatt Matting Paste were applied on the ceiling air vents. The small window on the opposite wall of the effect wall is covered with a thick black curtain.

LEDs bring the room to life

The futuristic bar starts to glow in the right kind of lighting. There is a UV-LED strip around the edges of the floor, and the air vents have LED lights. To enhance the effect, UV-LED 4 PCI lights were attached to the front wall, and there are UV-LED strips behind the ventilation cabinet. The general lighting consists of halogens. The room glows in the dark after charging enough from either the sun or the UD-LEDs, but the glow effect is maintained even when the LEDs and halogens are on.

'I hope this idea of mine and its implementation inspire designers and painters to freely and wildly experiment with paints and coatings,' says Tarmo Mooste. 'The key to a successful result is very careful planning and even more careful implementation. But if you don't succeed the first time, you can always paint over and start over!'
