Acrylic primer and undercoat for exterior wood surfaces.

Product Features

For outdoor painting of untreated, factory-primed surfaces or surfaces treated earlier with exterior wood surface paints, before finishing with Ultra house paints or Pika-Teho.

Recommended Uses

Wooden exterior cladding, weatherboards, railings, fences, etc.

Coverage

4-6 m²/l for sawn wood surfaces, 7-9 m²/l for planed wood surfaces.

Thinner

Waterborne

Application Method

brush, spraying

Application Conditions

The surface to be treated must be dry. This means that the moisture content of the wood is below 20%. During painting and drying, the temperature of the air must be at least +5°C and the relative humidity below 80%.

Surface preparation

Unpainted surfaces: Remove all dirt, mold and loose material from the untreated or industrially primed wood surface. Wash dirty or moldy surfaces with Tikkurila Homeenpoisto Mold Removal solution according to the instructions. Prime the bare wood surfaces at earliest possible stage of construction with Tikkurila priming oil. Protect any metal parts prone to rust, such as nail heads, with Rostex Super Akva Metal Primer. Remove loose resin from knots. Previously painted surfaces: Remove as much of the old paint as will come off with a scraper and brush the surface clean with a wire brush. Wash dirty or moldy surfaces with Tikkurila Homeenpoisto Mold Removal solution according to the instructions. Treat bare wood surfaces with Tikkurila priming oil. Patch paint with Ultra Primer.

Painting

First coat:

Stir the Ultra Primer carefully before use and thin with water max. 10%, if necessary. Apply with a brush or an airless spray gun. When spraying Ultra Primer use a brush afterwards to get a good adhesion to the substrate. Treat the end grains of the wood with particular care. Finishing painting is recommended to be performed as soon as possible after priming; however, after 10 months at the latest. Paint the surfaces with 1–2 coats of Ultra series house paint or Pika-Teho house paint, depending on the color difference between the surface and the paint and the condition of the treated surface. Wood contains resin and other staining extracts, particularly around knots, which can cause discoloration or bleeding in the painted surface due to variations in temperature and humidity. Using a primer reduces discoloration.

VOC

EU VOC limit value (cat A/d) 130 g/l (2010). Ultra Primer contains VOC max 130 g/l.

Cost-effective

Ultra Primer can be tinted to the color of the topcoat, reducing the amount of finishing paint needed. One layer of topcoat is usually sufficient. Finishing also takes less time, as brushing is easier.

Retards seepage of wood extractives

Retards seepage of wood extractives

The natural expansion and contraction of wood and its discolorations cannot always be avoided. Ultra Primer is optimized to retard the appearance of resin and other bleeding through the paint.

Perfect end result

Ultra Primer protects a house under construction from moisture, and if you are building in the winter, you can safely leave the topcoat to be applied in the spring.
