The hospital rooms not only have to withstand heavy loads due to the large flow of people, the walls also have to be easy to clean and have antibacterial properties. To meet this essential requirement, Tikkurila Argentum Plus 20, a water-based, semi-matt paint with low VOC emission levels, was chosen for the interior walls during the hospital’s recent renovation.
Argentum Plus 7 and 20 contain active silver phosphate glass that protects the painted surface from the growth of viruses and bacteria. The paint has a high abrasion resistance and can be easily cleaned with the detergents and disinfectants commonly used in hospitals. The antibacterial properties of the painted surface have been tested according to ISO 22196 against the bacterial strains Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538P and Escherichia coli ATCC 8739 for a period of 24 hours. The paint also accelerates the inactivation of coronaviruses when they come into contact with the painted surface.
Durable colours, good-looking walls
Over 10,000 m2 of walls were painted in Vidzeme hospital, both in common spaces such as corridors and wards as well as in the phlebotomy department and laboratory, where maintaining a high standard of hygiene is critical.
The grounding grey and brown shades F428 and X484 were chosen for the corridors in the rehabilitation department, while the neurology wards were painted with the calming green NCS S 0540-G50Y.

Another characteristic of Argentum Plus 20, which is appreciated by the cleaning staff on a daily basis, is that when a liquid spills on the wall, it only affects the top layer of paint and is not absorbed by the deeper layers. This is very important, because it is not always possible to immediately wash off a stain. With Argentum Plus 20, however long the stain remains on the wall, removing it will be easy.
