Repainted façade brings fresh appeal to campus building
A transformative repainting project has breathed new life into its façades using Tikkurila paints.
As the Tikkurila campus of Laurea University of Applied Sciences celebrates its 20th anniversary, a transformative repainting project has breathed new life into its façades using Tikkurila paints. The renovation was completed ahead of schedule, thanks to seamless teamwork between Laurea University, design agency Afry Buildings Finland and façade specialists Suomen Laatusaneeraus Oy.
Eye-catching mural inspires creativity on campus
The Tikkurila campus of Laurea University of Applied Sciences is home to around 3,000 students. The building is adorned with a magnificent mural on the end wall. The mural was designed by artist Tommi Musturi in collaboration with students and staff from the university.
A fresh new coat for a brighter future
During the façade restoration project, the seven-year-old mural received a fresh coat of paint.
“Tikkurila’s products allowed us to exactly match the original shades used in the mural. Renovating the mural made painting the façade a little more laborious, but it wasn’t a particularly challenging project compared to others we work on,” shares Antti Lampela of Suomen Laatusaneerausen Oy.
High-performance paints protect and beautify
The painting project used a range of high-performance products including:
• Finngard Clean-julkisivumaali for the plaster surfaces. Finngard Clean-julkisivumaali is a water-borne, EPD-verified, silicone resin paint that repels dirt and water due to its highly hydrophobic surface, keeping the structure clean and dry.
• Finngard Silikaattimaali paint for the thick plaster. Finngard Silikaattimaali is EPD verified and offers excellent water vapor permeability, making it ideal for painting technically challenging locations that are prone to damp, such as concrete, lime plaster, lime cement plaster and sand-lime brick surfaces. The product achieves the strict A1 fire-safety class.
• Panssari Akva for metal surfaces. Panssari Akva is semi-matt paint for metal surfaces that forms elastic paint film and protects from UV and moisture.
• Valtti Color for the wooden elements. Valtti Color is a tintable wood stain that protects the wood against weathering by slowing the effects of moisture and sunlight.
Help choosing the right product
Tikkurila’s laboratory services helped ensure the perfect product selection by analysing the composition of previous paint layers. Products were then selected based on the surface material being painted.
A comprehensive exterior colour selection
Tikkurila offers a wide range of colours suitable for exterior surfaces, all with a high-quality, durable finish. Tikkurila Facade 760 gathers these colours into a comprehensive collection of inspiring options for Tikkurila's professional customers.
Good maintenance extends the building's lifecycle
Laurea’s commitment to sustainability is evident in Tikkurila campus, with a solar power plant that supplies 10% of the site’s annual electricity needs. In addition, the university regularly updates its property maintenance plan to ensure a long and healthy building lifecycle.
“We regularly update the property's maintenance and repair plan and carry out various surveys and repairs every year. By doing this we aim to ensure a well-maintained and long lifetime for the campus,” explains Elina Flemming.
Tikkurila's products help keep façade surfaces clean and protected and extend their lifecycle in Finland's changing weather conditions.
Supporting sustainable construction
Tikkurila's proactive product development and rigorous quality control guarantee that we will be able to meet the sustainability demands of the future as well.
We also want to do our part to promote environmentally friendly sustainable development, which is why we are committed to supporting the goals of the Green Building Council.

The Finngard Clean-julkisivumaali and Finngard Silikaattimaali topcoats used in this project are EPD verified. This is essential for assessing a product's environmental impact, with the data used in whole-life cycle analysis (WLCA) to calculate a building's ecological footprint.
