Mineral facade

How to paint mineral façades

In this guide, we'll provide you with in-depth instructions on how to paint mineral facades.

Before starting, make sure the surface to be painted is dry, the ambient temperature is at least 2°C and the relative humidity is below 90%. Do not paint in direct sunlight. Always use the appropriate primer for the paint and follow the paint manufacturer's instructions for the best results. Using painting systems from a single manufacturer ensures high quality and that your materials are compatible.

1. Prepare for painting

Prepare your painting area by protecting nearby plants and any surfaces you don’t want painted, such as window frames and metal surfaces, to prevent splashing. The substrate has to be sufficiently dry and hard before starting.

For a new, unpainted surface: remove dust, dirt, salt and loose particles. To improve adhesion, sandblast or steel brush the surface to remove the glossy layer known as cement milk, then remove the sanding dust. New concrete surfaces can be painted after 28 days, when the excess moisture evaporates and the concrete becomes conductive to heat. Mineral fibre panels can be painted six months after installation. Newly plastered surfaces can be painted after one to two months, when the plaster hardens.

For a previously painted surface: remove any flaking, poorly adhering paint with a sandblaster or brush. Fill any cracks in the concrete up to the reinforcement, clean the rust from the reinforcement and cover it with anti-corrosion paint. Remove all surface defects according to the technical specifications of the building materials and smooth the surface with a suitable cement mortar. Wash the surface with detergent, or for mould or algae-covered surfaces use Tikkurila Homeenpoisto mould removal solution diluted according to the instructions.

2. Prime the surface

The need for priming is determined on a case-by-case basis. It is recommended to prime chalking surfaces with Hydrosolipohjuste. The water-repellent properties of the substrate can be improved with Silikonipohjuste. Follow the instructions of the product you are using when priming.

3. Paint the façade

Mix the paint well before use. For the first coat, dilute with up to 10% water by volume, if needed. Reserve enough paint from the same production batch to ensure a uniform colour across the entire surface.

Apply one to two coats with a roller, brush or high-pressure sprayer. New surfaces usually need two coats, while previously painted surfaces will need one or two coats depending on condition. When you finish, protect the freshly painted surface from rain and sun.

For more detailed recommendations, check the product label or product description. Maintenance intervals are affected by various factors including location and weather conditions.
